Hospital Planning

The Center for Disaster Medicine and Emergency Preparedness leads and participates in all hospital planning activities for disaster preparedness at Strong Memorial Hospital and provides technical assistance to hospitals in our 9 county region.

Each site is unique with its own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. CDMEP serve as a clearinghouse for hospital emergency preparedness by identifying, developing and disseminating best practices for:

Disaster Mental Health

A disaster, whether large or small, can produce significant psychological consequences not only for those in its path, but for disaster relief responders and the general community as well.

The Center for Disaster Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center have established a core disaster mental health component which provides a forum to develop, study and evaluate evidence-informed approaches to disaster mental health response and intervention.

In 2004, a grant supported by the Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and administered through the New York State Department of health and the New York State Office of Mental Health provided funding to support the development of a disaster mental health planning matrix and a disaster mental health training curriculum. The planning matrix provides a resource for counties to use in developing their community's response to the psychological impact following a disaster. The disaster mental health curriculum provides a resource for training mental health professionals in evidence-informed approaches in disaster mental health.

Disaster Nursing

The University of Rochester's School of Nursing offers the nation's first Masters degree program in Leadership in Health Care Systems.

Professionals completing this course will be prepared to manage resources and systems required to meet the needs of victims who have been affected by a chemical, biological or radiological incident or emergency.

This program, in the fundamentals of Disaster Management, is offered to all healthcare professionals as well as others who might be required to respond in the event of a major public health emergency (e.g., teachers, administrators, social workers, EMTs, fire and police).
