Disaster Mental Health
A disaster, whether large or small, can produce significant psychological consequences not only for those in its path, but for disaster relief responders and the general community as well. The Center for Disaster Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Rochester Medical Center have established a core disaster mental health component which provides a forum to develop, study and evaluate evidence-informed approaches to disaster mental health response and intervention.
In 2004, a grant supported by the Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and administered through the New York State Department of health and the New York State Office of Mental Health provided funding to support the development of a disaster mental health planning matrix and a disaster mental health training curriculum. The planning matrix provides a resource for counties to use in developing their community's response to the psychological impact following a disaster. The disaster mental health curriculum provides a resource for training mental health professionals in evidence-informed approaches in disaster mental health.
